BUCHAREST SUBWAY LINE 5 – UNDERPASS OF THE EROILOR STATION

Location: Bucharest (Romania)
Client: ASTALDI S.p.A.
Year: 2016-2017

Within the construction works of the new Bucharest M5 metro line, SGS dealt with a particularly sensitive design aspect, i.e. the excavation underneath the existing Eroilor station and the Dambovita artificial canal.

The excavation underneath the existing Eroilor station occurred along the whole asset length and it was carried out through TBM with the shield at about 1m below the station bottom slab. Due to such critical conditions – even more difficult considering that the existing metro line had to stay in operation during the works – the following activities were carried out: specific design of soil improvement works; careful evaluation of TBM excavation parameters; implementation of a large dewatering system which allowed to lower the groundwater level by approx. 25m; and a continous and careful monitoring activity with regards to the existing assets surrounding the excavation.

Finally, also the excavation underneath the Dambovita canal, close to the station, has been particularly important since part of the city main sewer is running at such location.
