BRAILA BRIDGE FOUNDATIONS

Location: Braila, Romania
Client: Astaldi – IHI
Year: 2018 – ongoing

SGS has worked for the executive and construction design of the foundations of the suspended bridge which will be built over the Danube river close to the city of Braila (Romania).

With its 1975m, it will be the longest bridge of the country, it has the 3rd longest central span in Europe (1120m) and it is actually the longest bridge in the world currently in construction. Ground stratigraphy shows significant presence of soft clay which – along with the medium-high seismicity of the area – make this project particularly challenging.

Foundation works include large diameter piles, deep and large shaft excavations, extended dewatering systems. SGS is now providing technical assistance and monitoring data review during the main construction works.
